Denzel Washington hit the stage yesterday, but not to recite lines; Denzel received an honorary degree at the University of Pennsylvania and addressed about 5,000 graduates as the commencement speaker of the Ivy league Institution.
Denzel admitted to be nervous and out of his comfort zone, but he said, “I’ve found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks. Nothing.” Denzel continued with , “Failure is inevitable. Yet instead of having something to fall back on, he said, graduates should “fall forward” — learn from their mistakes and keep going.” “Do you have the guts to fail?” Washington said. “If you don’t fail, you’re not even trying.”
Perfect words coming from the Tony Award Winning Actor who entered Fordham University in NYC as a pre-med student, changed to pre-law, then journalism, and almost flunked out before finding his calling and switching to drama.
My advice to graduates it to pursue your passions and do what your love to do, this will be your key to happiness and success; always follow your own dreams and not someone else’s… “Nothing beats a failure, but a try”!
