Kanye West let the BET Hip-Hop Awards finish without interruption on Saturday by abstaining from the event, The Associated Press reported. Mr. West, who was widely criticized by his fellow performers after interrupting an acceptance speech by Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards in September, had been nominated for nine awards at the BET event, which was taped in Atlanta. The rapper T.I. was also absent as he is serving a prison sentence on a weapons conviction, but his fiancée, Tameka (Tiny) Cottle, was in attendance to accept his awards for album of the year (for “Paper Trail”) and best collaboration (for “Live Your Life” with Rihanna). Jay-Z won MVP of the year, Drake was rookie of the year and Ice Cube was given the “I Am Hip-Hop” icon award. DJ AM, who died of a drug overdose in August, was posthumously given the DJ of the Year award. BET will broadcast the awards show on Oct. 27.
